CAPITAL CAMPAIGN The Community Grief Center began just a few short years ago when representatives from the bereavement community and some citizens who had traveled difficult grief journeys realized the need for a safe place where people of all ages could come to find hope and healing through connection with others. One of these people was Dr. Debby Baker – a retired Air Force colonel who was also a licensed clinical psychologist and who specialized in grief. She volunteered her services to help those referred to her through the board’s network and began putting together support groups for specific losses. A board of directors formed, they began fundraising and a generous donor purchased a building for the mission in 2016.
Since opening the doors, the Community Grief Center has helped hundreds of grieving children, adolescents and adults from all walks of life. As the demand for our free services grew and Dr. Baker brought on UNC Psychology interns to assist and learn, the board realized Dr. Baker could not run the entire operation and programs. An executive director was hired in July 2017 – a mixed blessing. While the added staff meant more efficient and effective operations, more staff with no private offices plus a growing number of clients was an obvious hurdle that needed addressed. The Community Grief Center’s generous landlord, a passionate supporter of the mission, and the new director began looking for a new facility. 2015 Clubhouse Drive – the old RVNA building was purchased for the Community Grief Center in January 2018. While the landlord is providing the facility to the mission for $1 per year, some updating and renovations are needed. Our goal is to raise $180,000 by the end of June (our fiscal year).
Your company, service organization or family can make a community investment that will touch the lives of thousands of people over the years to come. Our new facility offers naming opportunities to show your love and support of the community and/or honor a loved one.
